Product Description

This lapis lazuli weighs 11.00 carat and comes from Afghanistan where the finest material has been mined for thousands of years. The blue is deep and saturated with the fine golden flecks of pyrite that mark genuine lapis. Grade is AAA and the stone carries no dye and no wax filling which is common in cheaper lapis sold today.

How to spot real Afghan lapis

Good lapis shows an even royal blue with only small scattered pyrite and very little white calcite. Dyed stone often leaves colour on a cotton swab rubbed with acetone and it usually looks flat rather than deep. Afghan material from the Badakhshan region sets the benchmark that every other source is measured against.

Traditional use of लाजवर्त

Lapis is associated with Shani which is Saturn and is sometimes worn as an affordable alternative to blue sapphire. It is usually set in silver and worn on the middle finger. It carries a long history in jewellery and art far beyond astrology since ground lapis was once the source of ultramarine pigment. Any astrological benefit is traditional belief rather than a promise.

Care advice

Lapis is soft and porous so it needs gentle handling. Keep it away from perfume oil and household cleaners which can seep in and dull the surface. Wipe it with a slightly damp soft cloth and dry it right away. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaning. A cabochon of this size works best in a bezel setting that shields the edges.
